What to do at the weekends to keep the kids happy.  Well if you're in the South Yorshire / North Derbyshire / North Nottinghamshire area, here are a few ideas:

Elsecar Heritage Centre
Located in the picturesque village of Elsecar, and right on the Pennine Way, the Heritage Centre is a place of massive historical significance.  It houses the only Newcomen Beam Engine that remains in it's oringinal site.  The site now contains a large number of vaired retail businesses and craft shops, a massive children's play centre, as well as the Elsecar Steam Railway.  Numerous special events take place throughout the year includng 2 Thomas the Tank Engine days where kids can take a ride on Thomas the Tank Engine, and meet other characters from the books.

Cannon Hall Museum and Farm
Cannon Hall is a country house set in 70 acres of beautiful gardens.  The Museum is open to the public and there are varied events and exhibitions throughout the year.  Also situated on the site is Cannon Hall Farm, with a petting farm, adventure playground, farm shop, Tea rooms and gift shop.

Denby Pottery
Our kids loved the factory tour at Denby Potteries.  You hear a bit about the history of the Pottery, get to do a hands on moulding of a clay frog, and see a demonstration of plate decoration.  At the end of the tour you get to paint your own denby plate, mug or bowl which you can have fired and sent to you afterwards.  Kid's always love to eat from plates they have decorated themselves, or you can give them as gifts to grandparent.
